Southern Colorado Farms was founded in 1977 by John B. Smith, driven by his dream to return to his agricultural roots as a Missouri farm boy. With a vision of creating a farm that could thrive in the fertile soils of Southern Colorado, John focused on cultivating specialty crops tailored for the regional eastern markets. This forward-thinking approach helped establish Southern Colorado Farms as a respected name in the agricultural community.
In 1995, Amy Kunugi joined the company as an agronomist, bringing a wealth of knowledge and passion for sustainable farming. With her expertise in plant science and commitment to excellence, Amy quickly became an integral part of the team. Prior to joining Southern Colorado Farms, Amy earned her degree in plant science from Cornell University and further honed her skills through volunteering in the Peace Corps, spending two years in Guatemala and one year in Bolivia. Her global perspective and hands-on experience have shaped the company’s approach to farming. In 2001, Amy was appointed General Manager, a role in which she has excelled by leading Southern Colorado Farms to new levels of growth and success.
